General Submission Guidelines

Inkwell accepts unsolicited submissions in poetry, prose and artwork. Inkwell is dedicated to discovering new talent and bringing the work of writers and artists to a wider audience. We encourage diverse voices and have an open submission policy for both writing and art. 

Spring 2010 and Fall 2010 General Reading Period
August 1 – November 15, 2009

Spring 2010: Open theme. Submissions on any subject.
Fall 2010 Theme: What is Necessary?
What is necessary means making choices—from the simple to the complex, from day altering to life altering. Send us your fiction, essays, poems, and artwork exploring this theme for our Fall 2010 issue of Inkwell. Please mark Fall 2010 Theme Issue on the outside of the envelope.

Fiction Previously unpublished work only. Manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced, and not exceed 5,000 words. Send up to 2 stories

Nonfiction Previously unpublished work only. Manuscripts must be typed, double-spaced, and not exceed 5,000 words. Send up to 2 pieces. Please note: Inkwell is interested in memoir, literary essays and interviews of prominent literary figures. Do not send magazine features/news articles.  

Poetry Previously unpublished work only.  Must be typed, 70 line limit per poem. Send up to 5 poems.

All Submissions must include a cover letter with your name, address, e-mail phone number, title of piece, and word/line count and an SASE for notification. Do not include personal information anywhere on the manuscript.  Inkwell can assume no liability for entries lost in the mail or damaged. No manuscripts will be returned.

NOTE:  Indicate Poetry or Fiction on envelope, along with SPRING ISSUE or FALL THEME ISSUE.  Please use separate envelopes if submitting both Poetry and Fiction. Submissions not adhering to the above guidelines will not be considered.

Artwork, Comics and other graphic narratives: Inkwell accepts artwork, comics and other graphic narratives.  Artwork:  High-contrast black & white or color photographs or artwork. Include your name, address, phone number, and title on the back of each submission. Comics etc.: Send a CD with your work saved as a black & white or color PDF file. Stories should not exceed ten pages. For art, comics, and graphic narratives ONLY, please include an SASE of sufficient size and with sufficient postage for return of work.  SASE’s with insufficient postage will be used for notification only.  Artwork is considered during the reading period. Inkwell pays $10 per printed page and 2 complimentary copies.

Inkwell is produced in affiliation with the Master of Arts in Writing Program at Manhattanville College.  The program offers a highly flexible schedule of day and evening courses taught by distinguished authors and editors. Our Summer Writers’ Week, held each June, is open to writers and aspiring writers.
